The antioxidants are the protective substances for the organism

No matter what we are doing, processes take place in the organism, part of which is called oxidation. During oxidation, so-called free radicals are formed. The organism can intercept a certain amount of these harmful compounds and thereby prevent cell damage that would otherwise occur.

Only when the harmful compounds, i.e. the free radicals, are produced in excess, they can harm the organism. Antioxidants help the organism to deal with free radicals. They therefore ensure a balance in the body.

What are the most important antioxidants and where do they occur?

We are only talking about antioxidants here, but have not yet said which substances actually belong to this group. We would like to make up for that at this point.

Antioxidants include:

  • vitamin C
  • Beta-carotene
  • vitamin E
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Sulfides
  • Phytoestrogens
  • Polyphenols

Most of these Antioxidants occur in all-natural foods, including the animal Fat, fruits and vegetables. Beta carotene, for example, is found in the red pigment of tomatoes or carrots. Vitamin C is found in numerous citrus fruits and vitamin E in vegetable oils. The last two antioxidants on our list are found in cereals, red cabbage and Soybeans to find.

If these foods are supplied to the body in sufficient quantity, a responsive balance occurs. Balance means for the organism in this case to overcome the free radicals and thus the stress. If the body is not in balance, or receives too few antioxidants, the performance suffers.

What can oxidative stress lead to?

Few people have heard of oxidative stress, but it can occur during very heavy physical exertion. Basically, oxidative stress is not bad, if you do something against it. In this case, to keep the antioxidants in the body in balance.

If this does not take place over a longer period of time, these consequences may occur:

  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Cancer
  • cataract
  • age-related macular degeneration

However, these consequences do not mean that you should or must stop exercising. Athletes just need to make sure to replenish antioxidants.

For whom are antioxidants important?
