Vegan protein refers to protein sources and protein powders made entirely without animal ingredients. Unlike vegetarian products, which may contain milk or egg protein, for example, vegan protein is based exclusively on plant raw materials such as peas, soy, rice or hemp.
In practice, several plant sources are often combined to achieve the most balanced amino acid pattern possible, since individual plant proteins can be weaker in certain amino acids. For processed products such as bars, it is also worth checking the list of ingredients, as individual animal ingredients such as honey can occasionally be included.
How plant protein sources can be combined sensibly is explained in the guide Combining plant protein sources, and the Vegan protein guide also offers an introduction.
