Protein powder is a collective term for dried, highly concentrated protein obtained from animal or plant sources. These include whey, casein and egg, as well as plant variants such as pea, soy, rice or hemp.
In practice, protein powder is usually mixed with water, milk or a plant drink to make a shake, or worked into foods such as porridge and baked goods. The protein content per 100 g of powder differs depending on the source and processing, and for whey powder it is often about 70 to 90 g. When choosing, it is worth looking at the list of ingredients to assess the source, sweeteners and additives.
How different types of powder differ is shown in the guide Protein powder comparison, and what to look out for when reading the list of ingredients is explained in the guide Reading the ingredients list of protein powder.
