Protein bread refers to types of bread that have a raised protein content compared with classic bread. This is usually achieved by replacing part of the flour with protein-rich ingredients such as soya flour, lupin flour, linseed or isolated proteins, while the proportion of carbohydrates falls at the same time. The consistency can also differ from classic bread, and protein breads often feel somewhat denser and moister.
The actual protein content differs greatly between individual products, and a look at the nutrition table shows more reliably how much protein a bread really provides than relying on the name alone. Protein bread is suitable as an addition in everyday life but does not replace a complete protein-rich meal. For a balanced meal, protein bread combines well with further protein-rich toppings such as quark, cheese or egg.
Enrichment works in a similar way with protein pasta, and more on this can be found in the entry Protein pasta. An overview of high-protein foods is offered by the page High-protein foods.
