Electrolytes

Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride that carry an electrical charge in the body and are important for signal transmission in nerves and muscles and for fluid balance. They are taken in through food, especially through salt and many foods.

When sweating, the body loses electrolytes as well as water, mainly sodium. How large this loss is differs greatly from person to person, depending on sweat rate, training duration and ambient temperature. A noticeable imbalance can show itself, among other things, as muscle cramps or difficulty concentrating.

Relevance for nutrition and sport

During prolonged or intense exertion, especially in the heat, replacing water alone may not be enough if larger amounts of electrolytes are lost at the same time. Sports drinks therefore usually contain a mixture of sodium and other minerals in addition to carbohydrates, to support fluid and electrolyte balance during training.

  • Sodium for fluid balance
  • Potassium for muscle function
  • Magnesium for nerves and muscles

For shorter or moderate training sessions, plain water is usually enough, while for longer, sweat-heavy efforts targeted electrolyte replacement can make sense. The guide sports drinks explains more. How high your own requirement is can best be judged from training duration, weather and your individual sweat loss.
