Creatine

Creatine is a substance the body makes itself from the amino acids glycine, arginine and methionine, mainly in the liver, kidneys and pancreas. The body stores creatine mostly in the muscles, where it is involved in the short-term supply of energy during intense exertion. Creatine is also taken in through food, above all through meat and fish. In studies, creatine is examined mainly in connection with short, intense efforts such as sprints or strength training.

As a dietary supplement, creatine is often used in strength training, and different intake schemes are discussed in sports science. General information on dosage should always be understood as a guide, and this site gives no individual recommendations. People with kidney disease should seek medical advice before taking it. As with other dietary supplements, a balanced diet forms the foundation, and a supplement does not replace it.

General notes on the dosage of dietary supplements are provided by the entry Dosage, and more on classification as a dietary supplement is explained in the entry Dietary supplements.
